How to analyse hints for dark matter

Given the huge number of experiments searching for signals of particle dark matter, it is to be expected that some excesses will be observed occasionally.
The most recent example of such an excess stems from a search for keV-scale electron recoil events in the XENON1T experiment.
While it is relatively easy to identify dark matter models that can accommodate this signal, the real challenge is to compare the excess
with all available information from complementary measurements in order to draw robust conclusions regarding the viability and significance of the signal.
In my talk I will discuss how this challenge can be addressed with the global fitting framework GAMBIT, which has been developed to enable
the combination and interpretation of data sets from various different branches of physics.
As a specific example I will introduce the concept of axion-like particles, explain how these particles can give rise to the XENON1T signal
and discuss complementary constraints from astrophysics.
I will then present the lessons that can be learned from a robust statistical analysis of this model, using both frequentist and Bayesian methods.
